One Voice...In Harmony

September:

It occurred to me, that in each class, at the beginning of each year, I see rooms full of brand new faces. Even the returning students at Grace have grown and faces have changed over the restful weeks of summer.

And so, beginning in September, we will begin looking at our own faces, how the elements of our face can be balanced or unbalanced according to what expression may befall it. Drawing the face will be our first assignment and then as the year progresses, we will draw it again, to notice any subtle changes. During this month we will look at different styles of portraits and artists deepening the students understanding of the time periods in which those artists lived. Students in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th grades will focus on Picasso and his approach to creating Cubist art in relation to creating portraits. They will also be engaged in discussion and analysis of examples and will be asked to write a short response about Picasso based on the information handouts in class. In this way, each student will begin to unravel the threads that create harmony in art.

August

When I think about the things that create harmony, its important to understand balance. In art, that balance, exists when all the elements of a piece are working together to create an aesthetic that is pleasing to the eye.

I strive to balance our Art classes at Grace using a mixture of verbal and written instruction. The Almighty Lord then provides the key to the balance.

Our first assignment will be posted soon. Until then, we will be creating our portfolio/sketchbook for work.

Looking forward to seeing you all.
